The Life Changing Magic of Tiding Up

June 24, 2016 By Chantel Brankshire

24 Jun

Last summer, I did something I had never done before. I hauled all of my books into the living room and put them on the floor. I unloaded books I hadn’t touched since I packed them when we moved from Alaska more than twelve years ago. Piles turned into stacks, which turned into heaps, which turned into a mountain that covered most of the living room floor.  Charlotte thought it was a taste of heaven. (See photobombing pigtail in the corner of just one portion of my book mountain?)

And then I picked up the books one at a time and asked myself “Does this book bring me joy?”

A part of the book mountain I tackled today. #konmarimethod

Turns out more than half of the books I’d been hauling around the country with me for the past 15 years weren’t much of joy sparkers. So I traded them into our local used bookstore for a couple of these yellow slips. So I could get more books, of course!

These two yellow slips made me super happy today. Yay for being rewarded to clean out the books and media! #konmari #mckaysbooks

I’d been so skeptical of “Konmaring”. It sounded silly, and I couldn’t imagine how it’d be any different than any of the other methods I’d tried over the years. But when I read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a lot of things really clicked for me.

It was the balance I was looking for between the idea of simply shifting clutter around in clever ways and the idea of getting rid of everything non-essential to functioning.

While I don’t believe that my possessions are all animate objects, I do believe in being grateful for what I have and realizing that it’s more wasteful to keep what no longer is useful or has served its purpose (if only for a short time.) than it is to keep it out of guilt.

I’d kept them and dozens of other things in my house simply because I felt guilty throwing or getting rid of something that was “perfectly good”.

I had never thought about how much guilt I had attached to objects didn’t like or use or even want but kept because there was nothing wrong with them. When I took the time to be intentional about asking myself what place each of my things had in my life, I found that it helped me a lot. I got rid of a lot of stuff. I kept a lot too. Finding what actually makes me smile helps me create a home that is more restful and that I really enjoy keeping up a lot more.

While it’s not magic, the Konmarie method did give me a lot to think about. I love that it is focused around gratitude and joy- two things that are such a big part of my life already. Plus, my drawers have never looked so good for so long, thanks to the ideas for folding and organizing!

Because I love pretty journals, and because I was looking for something new for jotting down little thoughts about life, I picked up the  Spark Joy Every Day journal a couple of months ago. Based on the ideas in the Life-Changing Magic of Tiding Up, this journal is all about looking for the simple things that spark joy every day.

It has clean, simple pages with a place to write down a couple things every day that made you smile. I love that it has space for several years, so each day you could look back and have sort of an ebenzer to loving your life and what God has given you in it.

It  features full page inspirational quotes about being intentional, grateful, and joyful. I felt like the size was comfortable for carrying and the paper was nice to write on. I might not use it exactly as intended, but writing down my joy-sparkers definitely is a habit that keeps me focused on what’s really important in life.

The Legend of the Easter Robin { a book review }

June 10, 2016 By Chantel Brankshire

10 Jun

Long before I was even married, I started collecting books for children. Some of the first new books that went into my stash was a set by Dandi Daley Mackall.

I fell in love with her books because every one of them had such beautiful, sweet pictures, and simple stories. I hoped that one day I’d have a mini bookworm who would enjoy looking at the pictures and reading stories as much as I grew up doing!

Some dreams really do come true, because I am now lucky enough to be raising an adorable little bookworm who eagerly devours every book, whether or not it’s for toddlers!

EasterRobin

This Easter, I’ve been looking for a book that was less about Easter Bunnies and more about The Easter Story. When I saw The Legend of the Easter Robin, I once again fell in love with the gorgeous illustrations. I’d never heard the legend of the Robin, and it sounded like the perfect thing to read for this Easter and Easter’s to come.

We really loved the story about the little robin family and the little girl who watched and worried over the nest and learned to trust God with the robin’s nest (and with her own future!).

The legend of the robin’s breast turning red was precious. It was just the thing I was looking for in an Easter story, and coupled with the paintings, and the rest of the story we found it to be just what we wanted. My toddler loved looking for the robin in each picture and asked to hear the story again and again, even after Easter!

Easter books are probably the hardest for me to find. So this coming year, I want a head start! I’d love to hear your favorites for little people of any age!

When Your Friends Write Books { Reading Challenge Update)

May 21, 2016 By Chantel Brankshire

21 May

I can’t believe that we are about to wrap up May. My plans for blogging were interrupted when the three of us came down with a nasty bug. It was one of those mutating viruses that kept changing forms and kept us down for a little more than three long and miserable weeks. I have been playing catch up ever since.

May might be nearly over, but April was too good of a month to skip. I read three books in April–all three of them are brand new! Three of my friends put wings on their words and sent them out into the world as books with a few days of each other. I am so proud of  each one of them and feel so lucky to be able to place their books on a shelf on honor. Each one of them is unique and really special.

These three books checked off #4, #6, and #9 in this year’s challenge! I’m excited because that keeps me about on goal for the year, and these books were all really good!  So let me tell you about the books.

The Sound of Emeralds

I was reluctant when I picked up the first book in Rachelle Rea’s series. Not because I doubted she was an excellent writer, but because while I adore historical stories, romance has never been my favorite genre. It’s either boringly predictable or a bit unrealistic to real life and love.

But Gywn and Dirk won me over. I read Diamonds in one day.  And then devoured Silver as fast as work and life allowed me.  I think I started to really love the story in Silver. I cried and laughed and felt so drawn to Gwyn’s sorrow and Dirk’s struggles. Thankfully, Emeralds was about to be released by the time I was done so I didn’t have to wait long to finish the story.  Book three is when I really fell in love with the whole series. I rejoiced when Gwyn and Dirk found their happily ever after. The ending was perfection, but I didn’t want the story to end. I wanted it to go on and on.

If you are looking for a new series, I highly recommend the Steadfast Love Series. It is clean romance, interesting historical facts, and the unexpected plot twists are filled with inspirational lines and life experiences that fill your heart.

Always Plenty

Oh my heart. This little book is precious. Eddie and her family sacrifice and save for a poor family at church. Even though they don’t have much to spare, they find that what they have is more than enough and the joy of giving is what makes you really rich.  I laughed and cried the whole time I was reading Eddie’s story, because it really caught the true meaning of benevolence. Highly recommended reading for any children (or adults!) in your life. I love that Caroline not only wrote but illustrated it! That makes it extra special.

31 Days to Radically Reduce Your Expenses

I have admired Kalyn and her blog for many years. Reading her book was so exciting because I know how long and hard she worked to make it possible! Kalyn gives so much practical, easy to follow advice. If you struggle with budgeting, or just want some simple ways to cut back on your ordinary expensies, this is the book for you! I think sometimes we just accept that certain things (like insurance or medical payments) are non-negotiable. But that’s not always the case! I loved how she broke it down into easy to follow steps and chapters. It made a somewhat stressful topic actually fun to read about!

Happy is the new perfect

May 5, 2016 By Chantel Brankshire

5 May

As an outsider, we tend to judge moments of messy faces, meltdowns and mid store bribes on a scale of how perfect each mother is.

We say things like “I’ll always” and “I’d never” and we mean it too. We mean to give our future children the very best. And from over there it is so easy to see all the things we don’t want to include into our perfect brand of motherhood.

But there is something about motherhood that books and babysitting and even hearing people talk about it cannot prepare you for.

Motherhood rarely looks like we expect. It’s noisy, messy, confusing and oh does it find your weak points and your fears and glare them into your face.

Oh, the endless piles of laundry and the dishes that pile up everywhere and the toys that trip you in the night. The sleeplessness and the crazy way that you suddenly can forget the day and have no idea if it’s May or June or still March sometimes.

One day you find that you are the mom with the child having a meltdown in the middle of Walmart and you forgot your purse…somewhere.

And the always and the nevers don’t matter that much anymore.

So I’m not a perfect mom. I scramble and wonder if everyone knows that I have no clue what I’m doing over here.

I don’t have the latest hair and I’m lucky if my clothes look decent.

But I live for hearing her laugh, and for seeing the wonder in her eyes as she discovers a new bug or sees a bird.

The life we offer is a simple one. And my greatest dream has always been to make it a happy one.

Perfect isn’t what we do or how we look, afterall. Perfect is what we live.

And for me, I can’t think of a better perfect than Happy. Really happy.

Hallmark has some adorable collections right now, with items perfect for the mamas or women who mother even without children who are a part of your life. I’m thankful for a mom who taught me about the importance of laughter and hard work. Hallmark has beautiful cards that help express how much our moms mean to us.

Some make me laugh, like this mug.

Hallmark generously is offering one of you a few things from the Pretty Witty collection-the mug and bag shown as well as a framed art with the saying “Happy is the New Perfect” on it.

To Enter, tell me what makes you perfectly happy these days.

For a second entry, Please visit hallmark and tell me about your favorite collection in a separate comment.

Why I love March {plus a reading challenge update}

March 28, 2016 By Chantel Brankshire

28 Mar

I absolutely love March.

Winter is finally over, and spring in Dixie land is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Redbud, tulip trees,  dogwood, daffodils, violets and fruit trees all burst out one after the other.  It’s like a grand celebration of warmer days, sunshine and new things.

I get to dig in the garden again, and marvel over the miracles of seeds and sun and soil. And I relish every moment.

Plus, Scott and I tied the knot in March. We just celebrated 7 years. That right there is enough to make March one of my favorites.

But there is another thing that I always look forward to in March. It’s the celebration of one of my favorite things in the form of KindredGrace.com’s March of Books.

Any place that dedicated an entire month to bookish delights makes me excited. This year has been a little more quiet than some, but the posts have been so good.

And this month, a friend has worked feverishly and her first book is juuust about ready to be released. I’m so very excited about that!

March has been good this year.

However, I haven’t managed to finish any books this month. Has anyone else found spring fever hitting and the sun begging them outside lately? That’s been me. I’m hand turning the garden and it is also time consuming.

I have been reading though. I’ve been working on Book Two in Rachelle’s trilogy. (The final book comes out in April!!)

I’m also trying to check a few books off my “need to finish” list. (Including the last couple chapters of The Life-changing Magic of Tidying  Up—I started that a year ago.) But I’m not sure I will actually complete any of them before April rolls around. My goal is to finish at least one and read an entire new one in April. But we will see!

How is your reading coming? Best book you want to read in April?
