Another day of thankfulness and so many beautiful things- I can’t think of a better way to start my mornings than sitting down and reading the blessings you all have been sharing here this year as a part of GreaThings 2010. Thank you!
What I’m Thankful for today:
I’m thankful for gratitude. I’ve made it a point in my life to look for positive things, to gather up the little things, and to focus on the blessings and be thankful for what I have, no matter what is happening around me or to me.
And I honestly believe that being grateful and actively looking for the good things in every day has changed me.
Over the years as I’ve counted my blessings, and looked for little things to be thankful for each day and each week, I’ve found riches that even the poorest of poor can enjoy. I’ve found that every day is so full of little blessings, that even when my heart was breaking and life felt hard and tears seemed more plentiful than smiles that there wasn’t a day that went by that I couldn’t find something to give thanks for.
During hard times, I live for this. When my world is topsy-turvy and I don’t know what to do or what to think, I can count on little blessings, and focusing on the good and beautiful brings peace, contentment, rest to otherwise weary days.
Being positive and being grateful doesn’t mean that circumstances change. Just that how we view those circumstances changes. It means that instead of seeing just the pain and the evil, we see that God can use these things for good, and realizing that every day He surrounds us with ever so many, even if ever so small, tokens of His care for us.
It isn’t always easy. There are lots of times when I’d rather complain and feel sorry for myself. But making gratitude a way of life gets to you after a while and you can’t help but look for something to be thankful for.
Being thankful and being grateful to God for the every day blessings has been itself one of the biggest blessings and Great Things of my life.
What is more, is that it isn’t restricted to just a few: Gratitude is a gift that all of us can possess. It is ours for the asking, and for the finding.
Sometimes we think that “Great Things” means the same thing as big things. But great things and beautiful things and sometimes the biggest blessings can be masked in the form of the little and almost obscure moments of our day.
It can be raindrops on pine trees, or the call of a loon over a still lake, or the smile of a stranger, or the warmth of a cup of tea and the comfort of a favorite verse. It can be anything that speaks of God’s love, anything that warms our hearts, anything that reminds us that He cares. Because He does. And we should be grateful for all these things.
So I’m thankful for gratitude. For the chances that I’ve had to learn to look for thankfulness, even during rainy days, and I’m thankful for the chances I have right now to be grateful.
And I’m glad that even though I’m not nearly as grateful as I wish that I was, that every day I have new chances to cultivate gratitude and to praise Him for the Great Things that He has done…and is doing every day.
