If you like old books, George MacDonald is one of my favorite authors. He was a Scottish minister in the 1800s who was fired for having the audacity to preach that God is good, and that He loves us. To support his large family, MacDonald began writing novels, weaving spiritual truths within them. He probably reached more people through his books than the pulpit. C.S. Lewis said he never wrote a word that wasn't influenced by MacDonald's works. 'The Curate's Awakening' is my favorite. I reread it annually and grew with each reading (The curate isn't the only one who "awakes.")

My favorite children's book is "The Princess and the Goblin," also by George MacDonald. Beautiful nuggets of truths are scattered through this fantasy.

Another favorite is 'Hawk and the Dove' by Penelope Wilcox. Whenever I think I've met a kindred spirit, I give them this book to see if their heart also connects with it. The cover makes it look like a romance novel--it definitely isn't. I picked it up thinking, "I'm not Catholic, so why am I reading a book about monks?" and then was swept up in the story. It still touches my spirit and makes me grow every time I read it.

If you're going to put two books on your reading list, The Curate's Awakening and Hawk and the Dove are my top two recommendations. Get through the first two chapters of each--some people thought they started slow--and you won't ever be the same...

I have read 21 books toward my goal of 55 books. At my current pace, I'm 4 books behind schedule. BUT that is my current status and I have already read 4 books in June. I am trying hard to catch up this month.

Here is the page on my blog with the link to all my reading reviews, including May's that I posted today - http://debbiesdigest.blogspot.com/p/reading-challenge-2013.html

You know, so many posts in recent days have been about listening. It is something which is quite challenging - being content to sit in silence, and to just listen. You are so right - the memories the silence brings are wonderful. Bittersweet too at times, but wonderful. I loved reading your post - and gummy worms will probably make me grin from now on!

I found out u could have waived it. :P but with a hospital birth it is harder. :) plus my mom had it so.. Guess that makes me possibly at greater chance of having it. Tho I think it unlikely. :)

Congratulations on reaching 30 weeks! It seems like your pregnancy is flying by and she'll be here before we know it.
How wonderful that you got a good deal on a crib set!!
And how fun that your Mom is there visiting :)
But bummer about the cold! Get well soon!
Oh, I didn't know you had a negative blood type that you had to shots for.
I'm reading 2 books right now- well finishing one up with Ali (it's taking longer than I had anticipated but that's okay!) and the other is called Battlefield of the Mind. It's really good so far! It talks about replacing bad thoughts with good thoughts and basically winning the war over Satan in your mind. Because that's really where evil, apathy, etc... starts-in our minds and what we let in that can eventually "take over" and lead us down the wrong paths. It's really opening my eyes to see how careful I need to be in what I read, watch, listen to and even who I spend time with.
